Tall and narrow, with pointed arches, lancet-windows are typical of church edifices of the earliest European Gothic period, from 1140 onwards. They acquired the "lancet" name from their resemblance to a lance.
Their popularity was revived during the Gothic revival of the 19th century, so that they are seen in Christian cathedrals and churches all over the world.
