Tall and narrow, with pointed arches, lancet-windows are typical of church edifices of the earliest European Gothic period, from 1140 onwards. They acquired the "lancet" name from their resemblance to a lance.
Rose- or Catherine- windows are particularly characteristic of Gothic architecture, though their origins are much earlier and they appear in various forms throughout the Medieval period.
Both windows' popularity was revived during the Gothic revival of the 19th century, so that they are seen in Christian cathedrals and churches all over the world.
